# OpenAI Shut Down Transparent Backgrounds for gpt-image-2; Use the 2.5 Models

> OpenAI shut down background transparent for gpt-image-2 on 2026-09-30. A transparent request is now rejected by OpenAI with a 400 and is not billed. For transparent images use the official gpt-image-2.5-flare or gpt-image-2.5-sunburst; all three share price and parameters, so only the model name changes.

**2026/10/15 23:43 (UTC+8)** · Service Notice · OpenAI

⏸ **`gpt-image-2` no longer supports transparent backgrounds: OpenAI shut down its `background: "transparent"` on 2026-09-30. For transparent images use the official `gpt-image-2.5-flare` / `gpt-image-2.5-sunburst`**

This is a change on OpenAI's side: transparency for `gpt-image-2` had been a preview since 2026-08-21 and was shut down on September 30, with OpenAI pointing users to the two 2.5 models, which support transparency natively. A transparent request to `gpt-image-2` is now rejected by OpenAI itself with 400 `Transparent background is not supported for this model.` and is **not billed**. APIYI re-tested on October 15: all 14 text-to-image and 7 image-edit calls were rejected, while `opaque`, `auto`, and no `background` all generated normally.

Migrating only takes a model name change; keep every other parameter (all three share price and parameters):

* Text-to-image: `gpt-image-2.5-flare`
* Edits: `gpt-image-2.5-sunburst`

The transparent background FAQ and the GPT-Image docs have been updated — see [How do I generate images with a transparent background](/en/faq/image-transparent-background).
