For transparent images use the official gpt-image-2.5-flare / gpt-image-2.5-sunburst This is a change on OpenAI’s side: transparency for gpt-image-2 had been a preview since 2026-08-21 and was shut down on September 30, with OpenAI pointing users to the two 2.5 models, which support transparency natively. A transparent request to gpt-image-2 is now rejected by OpenAI itself with 400 Transparent background is not supported for this model. and is not billed. APIYI re-tested on October 15: all 14 text-to-image and 7 image-edit calls were rejected, while opaque, auto, and no background all generated normally. Migrating only takes a model name change; keep every other parameter (all three share price and parameters):
  • Text-to-image: gpt-image-2.5-flare
  • Edits: gpt-image-2.5-sunburst
The transparent background FAQ and the GPT-Image docs have been updated — see How do I generate images with a transparent background.
