write_response_body_failed for those requests, with no charge. Your direct line cannot carry responses of tens of MB; route image requests through the proxy (or turn on TUN mode).
This is the opposite of “image calls drop after about 90 seconds behind a proxy”. The two pages now link to each other, and the comparison test in the FAQ tells you which route suits you.
